It has been a month since the last posting on this blog. That must be a new record! This gardening season is going to be a challenge. We received no measurable rain for over three weeks and then this afternoon we were blessed with a rain shower. We were so excited to get a little over a third of an inch of rain.
After the dry spell, which included a couple of extremely hot days, today's rain was a welcome sight. The tomatoes are looking fairly healthy but smaller than they should be for this time of year. For the past few weeks, we have been reusing dish water for the garden and it has kept the plants alive.
The first green bean planting was discouraging. One row germinated but the plants were eaten by something. The other row was a different bean variety and never germinated. We were wondering if the garden was going to produce any crops. Terry replanted the one row and sprayed the nibbled row to deter any hungry creatures. Hopefully that green bean bed will do better the second time.
Last week Terry sowed green beans in another garden bed and they are sprouting nicely. In two or so weeks we will sow more green beans in another of the garden beds. It might sound like a lot of green beans but we try and plant enough to supply our needs and those of Rebecca and Terry too.
According to the almanac, this summer is to be dry and warmer than usual. That means changes must be made in order to fill the freezer for winter. We have begun to use our Panda washer to do some of the laundry on the back porch. It allows us to reuse the water for the garden. To see the Panda, scroll back to 2017 when we added this much needed machine to our household. It has been a life saver for the garden.
Next post will be an update on the rest of the garden.
