Still No Rain

We are nearing the end of August and there has been no measurable rain since July. One of our gardening rules is to avoid the use of well water for the garden.  Normally the rain barrels provide needed water when we experience a dry spell. We have been reusing dish water via a five gallon bucket for the past ten days.  Rain has been predicted several times but it seems to have fallen elsewhere.

This photo shows the third watermelon we have harvested from our garden.  We were so excited to finally pick watermelon that we forgot to take any photos. There are still a few melons in the garden that we hope will be as tasty as the first three we have enjoyed. This year we grew a different variety called the "Mini Love".  They are a more rounded melon and much smaller than last year's variety.

In spite of having such hot and dry weather we have had a productive garden this year.  The cucumbers and carrots are in the freezer and the rest of the tomatoes will join them today. We lost the Butternut Squash to the dry weather and the tomato season was shorter than normal.  The green bean plants are now filled with blossoms and we are concentrating our efforts to keep them healthy. Our garden got off to a late start this spring due to weeds but we have been blessed with plenty of food for the winter.
