We certainly have been blessed with our garden this year. One of our trials was to try growing cantaloupe and on Thursday we cut open the first one. The first thrill was that it looked good so we must have picked it at the correct time. The bonus was that it tasted delicious. Terry left Friday to go to a Civil War reenactment in Lebanon at the Union Canal Tunnel Park. The rest of the cantaloupe might be gone before he returns on Sunday evening.
While Terry is at "war", I am busy on the home front. Picked about 2/3 of a bucket of beans this morning. At the same time, I tore out the plants in the one raised bed. We still have two more beds that will be supplying a few more green beans. The season is swiftly coming to a close. These beans will have to remain in the bucket, on the floor, until later this afternoon when I will blanch and freeze them. There are other chores to deal with first.
September is very close and that is when I begin making a supply of homemade soups to freeze. These usually last until January or February and then I make a few more varieties to last until May.
This one is a new recipe that I created. I call it "Cabbage Chili". Simple to make and we think it is quite tasty. One batch finished and probably five more different varieties to go.
What goes with a bowl of hot homemade soup? Yes, you guessed it - homemade bread.
When Terry gets home Sunday evening, his dinner will be soup and a nice fat slice (or two) of "almost" fresh bread.
It is time for me to get started on those green beans....
