We are halfway through the month of September and autumn is in the air. Warm days and cool nights have us thinking of garden clean-up and getting the raised beds ready for winter. The marigolds even look like autumn with their yellow and orange colors. We will wait until the flowers dry and will collect the seeds for growing next year's flowers.
The asparagus ferns are tall and doing their part by feeding the asparagus roots to insure a healthy crop in the spring. When the ferns turn brown, we will cut them off close to the ground. The cherry tomato plants in the front bed are still producing more tomatoes than we need. To the right is the sweet potato bed which will be ready to harvest in late September or in October, depending on the weather. We want to dig the potatoes before a heavy freeze.
I wanted to plant a lot more carrots this year but didn't get it done. The carrots did their best to give us a few meals in spite of my lack of organization. Homegrown carrots are so much more tender than those you buy in the store. We did the best we could with the garden this year and I tried to keep on top of the chores when Terry was away but things don't always go as planned. As we PA Dutch say "Ich duh was ich kann" - "I do what I can"
Now that our gardening is coming to an end for this year, the other projects on our "to do" list will be addressed. Watch for posts about the projects that will be keeping us out of trouble - at least most of the time.
