Garden Update

We have had some very hot, humid and dry weather.  Thankfully we have two rain barrels to provide water for the garden beds. The Butternut squash  looks healthy and hopefully will ripen before frost.  Our garden is behind schedule this year and the squash isn't usually ready to harvest until mid September.

This year we are trying a different melon variety.  Last year we grew the large oblong old fashioned variety but this year we planted Mini Love Hybrid Watermelon. These smaller melons weigh about seven to nine pounds and take approximately 80 days to mature.  If all goes well we should be eating watermelon next week.

Our cucumbers are doing well this year.  We usually buy all of our seeds from Park Seed Company and have been pretty successful with them. This cucumber variety is called "Pick A Bushel" and we have been growing them for at least three years,  They are fatter and lighter in color than the cucumbers we see in the grocery store but they have a good taste and are said to never become bitter. We already have fifteen containers of cucumber salad in the freezer and now I will start making these beauties into more salad.
