Strange Gardening Year

Gardening season has been a challenge this year.  We began what we hoped would be a good year by planting two beds of green beans.  We were pleased that the weather cooperated and we planted the beans fairly early.  From there it went downhill.  We bought the seeds from the same company but very few of the beans germinated.  Is it the weather we thought?  Of course by the time we found that the beans weren't going to grow (we don't count a hand full of plants a crop) it was later than normal when we replanted.  Thankfully, these beans germinated and produced  more beans than normal.   We are off to a better start....

The cucumbers were beginning to grow when either a groundhog or rabbit decided to nibble on the plants.  At least they left a few stems and leaves. We sprinkled a few mothballs around the plants to deter the varmints.

The cucumbers must have had the will to live because the above photo was taken a week after the destruction from the varmint.  So far we have harvested ten cucumbers and have six containers of cucumber salad in the freezer.
