April

It's early May and I am already behind schedule with our blog. These photos should have been posted in mid April. Must be something about old age.  For some reason I move slower than I once did.  The flower beds are beginning to be quite colorful.  The little yellow Irises didn't look healthy in the autumn but after dividing them, they are looking better this spring.

The pink Bleeding Heart has been dying little by little but the white one seems to be flourishing.  They are more than twenty years old so I guess I will have to replace them soon.  The Winter Aconite tucked between the Bleeding Hearts has dropped its seeds and the stems and leaves will soon die.  Next year in February, we will happily see its little yellow blooms again.

My favorite Fern Leaf Peony is blooming!  It shows its delicate red flowers almost a month before a regular peony blooms.  This plant is part of the peony that a neighbor gave my grandmother around 1921.

Terry's Lilac was beautiful and full this year.  Sadly the Viburnum next to it has already finished its blooming season. When both of them were blooming, the fragrance was delightful.  The small plant in the center is a new Hydrangea that is supposed to have white blooms that are as large as a dinner plate.  We will wait and see what it looks like as it matures.

Around the third week of April we ordered five yards of mulch to be delivered.  As the man was dumping it onto our driveway it began to drizzle.  We quickly covered the mulch with a tarp and that is where it remained for almost a week.  We finally started to spread the mulch on our flower beds and will also add it around our raised garden beds.  The large bed in front of the house was the first to be finished.  More photos will be in the next blog post.  Terry is making a bench to sit between the day lilies.

A close-up of the evergreen Azalea in front of the house.  Not many blooms this year but still pretty.
