Mid December - Garden Asleep

It is slightly past mid December and the garden is asleep. The rhubarb patch has its winter coat of straw and we are already thinking of the wonderful rhubarb that will appear in spring.  The cage has been set to, hopefully, trap the groundhog who recently took up residence near our garden. We trap these little troublesome creatures and relocate them at least ten miles from our garden.

The asparagus has its winter straw coat too.  The bed is well established now and each year the crop is larger than the last.  The only problem is the roots are pushing the south wall of the bed.   We have learned that cinder blocks were not the best choice.  That is what happens when you follow gardening suggestions from a magazine.  We might try and fix the problem next spring but it will take some thought.

We have six (four foot square) beds that were our original back yard garden.  In late summer we filled three of the beds with baby strawberry plants.  They grew well and should provide us with some strawberries this coming June.
We have never covered our strawberries and were debating if we wanted to cover them this year. Time will tell if not covering was the right decision.
We are looking forward to spring!
