Summer is moving along quickly. We had a very dry spell but then were blessed (?) with nine inches of rain in two days. The Swatara Creek flooded its banks but fortunately we live on a hill. Many of the area roads were damaged and closed. Once the water subsided, repairs had to be made to local roads and bridges. All roads were opened within five days following the storm.
The Butternut squash are producing nicely this year. That is a good thing because we have only two packets of squash left in the freezer from last year. Not all of the Butternut are as ripe as we would like but they detached themselves from the vines. We are hoping that they continue to ripen on the back porch bench.
The zucchini plants were beginning to die so we pulled them out. In one of the small square beds, we planted a few seeds to try and get a second crop. This is part of our trial and error gardening.
The cucumbers grew well this year and we were inundated with the long green things. We have fifteen quarts of cucumber salad frozen for winter use. I wasn't going to can any bread and butter pickles this year but had to change my mind.
Finally we yelled "enough" and pulled out the vines. In another of the small square beds Terry planted a few seeds to see if we can grow a second crop to give us fresh cucumbers for salads throughout fall. Another trial for this year.

Looks great. Lots of work ahead for freezing for winter
