Just realized that I haven't been keeping up with my Blog. June slipped past me way too quickly. Due to weather and some health issues, our garden began a little late and was planted in sections. No worry, by July the vegetable plants will have caught up to previous years. As we age, we learn to adapt and not be so rigid about schedules. At least every two years we rotate crops and since sweet potatoes need more depth we decided not to plant sweet potatoes this year. The Butternut squash were planted in the 18 inch deep potato bed. This photo was taken on June 12th and they look as if they are happy in their home.
In the lower part of this bed you can see the Sugar peas. Luckily we took a photo because the bunnies devoured the peas. We only harvested a handful of peas this year but two bunnies were trapped and driven to the mountain to new homes. Bunnies may be cute but NOT when they eat our food.
We found the forgotten cauldron (plastic) when we cleaned out and organized the storage shed and it became the home to our Spearmint this year. Terry likes to add spearmint leaves to the basket when he brews a pot of white tea. Very tasty.
Our Rhubarb plants gave us quite a nice harvest this year. I made two batches of Cherry Rhubarb Jam in addition to cooking some sauce for eating. We have enough rhubarb frozen for at least two more batches of jam and some for Rhubarb Sauce and Rhubarb Crisp. Terry is not a jelly or jam lover but he really likes the Cherry Rhubarb.
