Spring is not in sight but it is getting closer. February has been a very wet month and we are looking forward to a little sunshine. We have been blessed with three sunny days this week which is cause for excitement.
This afternoon I took photos of our Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) that is almost ready to bloom.
One more warm day and these little beauties will be in full bloom.
Now that we are seeing those first signs of spring, it is time to move past the garden planning stage and go into the preliminary garden work.
The potting table has been painted and installed under the grow lights in the basement. We have mapped out the location of each vegetable or fruit crop.
There will be a number of changes to our 2018 garden.
One of our more intelligent purchases is shown at the right. These are called Greenhouse Buckets and are made in the USA. They are about the size of a five-gallon bucket and the wheel on the top can be opened or closed. Night time condensation recycles water and reduces the amount of watering we have to do. On a sunny day, with the wheel closed, the temperature inside the bucket is 30 to 40 degrees higher than the outdoor temperature.
We have been very pleased with these buckets and have bought several. We were elated when Rebecca and Terry bought us another set last Christmas. More buckets mean more vegetables.
One of our "trials" for this spring is to plant cabbage and broccoli seedlings under the buckets in mid April. The goal is to get a jump-start on the growing season.
