Sleeping Garden

December has arrived and, ready or not, winter is on its way.  The marigold bed has been cleaned and is awaiting spring.  We saved seeds from both the tall and short marigolds for planting next year.  We even saved extra for a friend who is excited about growing flowers.  The bird feeders will continue to supply Terry's feathered friends with nourishment throughout the winter and in turn they will fertilize our marigold bed.

Today it feels as if winter is very close.  The sky is cloudy and the air feels very damp. A cold rain is on the way.  Thankfully it is too early for that white stuff.

You can see in this photo that our neighbor has his corn field ready for winter. He is an elderly man who has farmed all of his life and this field is more of a hobby than a job.  He sells some sweet corn but mostly plants it as a labor of love.  The deer eat their share which helps to keep them away from our garden.

The raised beds are empty except for the strawberry and asparagus.  As soon as the asparagus foliage dies back and turns brown, we will cut it to the ground.  We don't want to take the chance of any asparagus beetles making a home for the winter.

Once the foliage is cut, we will  consider our garden ready for a nap.
