Exciting Harvests

One of our trials this year was to plant "Sugar Baby" watermelons. The first one we picked wasn't ripe enough so that qualifies as an error.  Another week or so went by and we decided to try our luck with a second melon. Success! I had cut up half of the melon before I remembered to take a photo. There is still another melon in the four foot square bed plus two very small ones that might not grow large enough for picking.  Will definitely try again next year.

Another "first" this year was trying to grow pumpkins that are ideal for pies. Terry picked  this beauty that is about the size of a bowling ball. After scooping out the seeds and pulp I baked it and mashed the nice orange flesh.  I must admit that it looked just as good as the canned variety. Tomorrow I plan on baking a crustless pie and some pumpkin Snickerdoodles.

Last evening I baked a loaf of pumpkin bread with walnuts and raisins.  Before I could take a photo, company arrived and I served the pumpkin bread.  Here is what is left.  Thanks to a tip from my cousin Mim, the raisins didn't sink to the bottom of the loaf.  We still have a few more pumpkins to harvest so more bread will be in our future.  We like to have various kinds of dessert breads in the freezer. We will be planting pumpkins again next year.

We have been setting traps and relocating rabbits to nice homes in a country setting with everything they need to live a happy life. We were tired of the rabbits eating the green beans that were meant for our winter food supply. The plants have begun to produce beans again and yesterday Terry picked two buckets of green beans.  Hopefully we will continue to enjoy a garden without rabbits for the remainder of the season.
