Promises

This afternoon, Terry took photos of what I call our "promise" plants.  These are the plants that have a long growing season before we can harvest the "fruits" of our labor, but they promise a bountiful harvest at the end of the season.  Three years ago we bought two dwarf apple trees and this year we have three apples on the one tree.  This photo shows the two apples on one poor little limb.

The other apple is growing nicely, but now we have to start thinking about the area deer population.  We may drape some netting over the tree to protect our mini crop.

Last year was the first year that we tried our hand at growing Butternut squash and we were excited to harvest seventeen squash.  We still have a number of vacuumed packs in the freezer and weren't going to plant any Butternut squash this year. However we had two seeds left in the pack and decided to plant them.  Here are two of the three squash that have developed so far.  The one tiny one is perched on the end wall of the bed.

Growing pumpkins for pies is one of our "trials" this year and we have four pumpkins that are growing in the bed along the garage.  This little guy is beginning to turn a yellowish orange but must have an exploring spirit because he is growing  outside the raised bed.

This one is actually growing in the raised bed like the others. He is a rule follower while his more adventuresome brother is the wild one of the family.

Growing watermelons is another of our trials this season.  So far we have three that are growing in a four foot square bed.  These Sugar Baby melons are small melons but are supposed to be good tasting. Hopefully we will find out later this season.

The other two melons that promise to provide juicy, sweet desserts.

One of the other trials for 2017 was cantaloupe but so far we have nice looking vines and flowers but no cantaloupes.  Will take a photo at a later date if some fruit appears.
