It's SPRING

The end of March is in sight and time to begin seriously thinking about the garden. In February, we divided our oldest rhubarb plant (George) but weren't sure if we did it correctly.  This morning I removed the layer of protective straw and George is alive and looking healthy.  He is the plant in the lower left corner. The other two pieces of George are now named Georgette and Georgine. They are the plants in the center and the upper left of the photo. Terry has more of the stone blocks that surround the bed and is planning to enlarge the area. That will give us room for three more plants. We like to be able to freeze plenty of rhubarb for winter use.

Earlier in March we planted broccoli and cabbage seeds and those seedlings will soon be ready to move to the back porch in preparation for transplanting into the garden beds.  For fun we planted a few radishes to see if they would mature under the grow lights.  They are in the cups on the right of the photo and are looking good.  Today I planted more seeds in the small trays.  Tall marigolds and shorter marigolds for one of the flower beds. Other seeds were cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkins, chives, parsley, rosemary, and oregano.  As soon as the raised beds are dry enough Terry will get out the rototiller and loosen up the soil.  We haven't been able to plant any of our onion sets and we usually have the first planting in the ground by this time.  Weather doesn't always work with us.
