Almost the end of July and we have had very hot weather. Too hot for me. Temperatures from 90 to 98 degrees is way beyond my comfort zone of 60 to 80 degrees. The lack of rain has challenged us to find ways to water the garden. We have two 55 gallon rain barrels but don't like to deplete them in less than a week. To supplement rainfall, we do laundry on the back porch and Terry carries buckets of wash and rinse water to the plants. So far we have been able to keep the vegetable plants happy.
Another photo of our new Rose of Sharon bushes. They have begun to bloom and should be quite a bit larger by next summer. We have one on the north side of our yard that is at least seven feet tall. These will not be allowed to grow that tall.
A new photo of the Marigold bed that we plant each year. Terry loves his stinky Marigolds. We save seeds at the end of the season and start our plants in the basement in April.
The empty bed on the left is where we grew cabbage and cucumbers. We have enough cucumber salad in the freezer until next summer, so we pulled out the vines this past week. In another small bed we have two cucumber plants started to see if we can harvest fresh cucumbers during the late summer into early autumn. One of our trials! The empty bed on the right had been filled with green beans and Terry is thinking about planting more beans for a later crop. To me, the empty beds mean that gardening season is moving towards the end. I am not sure if planting more crops is what I had in mind for late July.
