More preparation

Another beautiful day to work in the garden.  This four by twelve foot raised bed needed a little tender loving care.  The topsoil we bought from a local nursery was not a good quality product and ended up making a lot more work for us.

We added chopped leaves, compost, cow manure and sand to the bed and Terry ran the rototiller through it to thoroughly mix it.  The bed is now ready for planting.

Later in the day, we added the same amendments to another four by twelve foot bed. That bed is ready for planting.

Two years ago, we bought the little Troy-bilt rototiller and it is perfect for raised beds. For those of you who snicker or roll your eyes at the way we name objects; the tiller's name is Hector. Can you figure out why his name is Hector?

Later in the evening and overnight, we received almost a half inch of rain.  It is a good thing that I had scrubbed out the two 55 gallon rain barrels last week while Terry was mowing.  We had a rain gutter put on the rear of our storage shed for water collection and last year we had plenty of water for the garden.  All we have to do is put in a mosquito dunk and let it rain.

When Terry checked the barrel this morning, he was surprised to find that the one barrel was almost half full.  As soon as the first barrel is full, the water automatically flows into the second barrel.  The overflow hose on the second barrel allows the excess rainwater to flow onto the ground.  Last year, a poor little field mouse found his way up through the overflow hose and fell into the barrel of water. We later found him floating on the water.
