Year Three . . . bigger and better

One of our new additions to the garden!  Terry built this four foot by sixteen foot bed in two sections.  The half that is in the foreground is eighteen inches deep and is for sweet potatoes.  We took a Beauregard sweet potato we had bought at the grocery store and cut it in half; stuck toothpicks in it to suspend it in a jar of water. When the shoots were five inches long, I broke them off and stuck them in water to root.  When rooted we planted the little plants in the garden.  This photo shows what they looked like by the first week of June.  We had so many hot and sunny days in May this year that Terry had to build a frame out of pcv pipe to shade the young plants.  We strapped netting to the framework and it shaded the tender plants without depriving them of light.

The half of the bed in the background is only twelve inches deep and has onions and green beans planted in it. Probably would be a good place for carrots if we add a little more sand to the soil.  We have been reading up on companion planting in order to avoid using sprays and other harmful chemicals.

The other raised bed that Terry built this year is also four foot wide and sixteen foot long.  This one is for strawberries.  Oh yummy!  We chose ever bearing berries as a start.  When it is time to replant this bed, we may try the June bearing type.  We are enjoying our gardening adventure and learn something every day.  We always tell everyone that we garden by trial and error.  Thankfully, we have had more successes than failures.

Early June and we have good looking broccoli and cabbage plants. The tomatoes and cucumbers are hidden in this photo.  Guess I was too excited about the broccoli and the cabbage.

It is exciting to think about having our own homegrown vegetables. Looking forward to trying two recipes I found for cabbage soup.
